3 under-trial militants escape from police custody in Tripura
Guwahati: Three suspected militants of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) escaped from police custody in North Tripura district, where they were accused of the sensational abduction and murder of Litan Das on Saturday night.
The three murder suspects who were being held at Kanchanpur sub-jail overcame jail guards and fled police custody.
The three militants have been identified as Lalthang Reang, Jiban Reang, and Sangamani Reang were all arrested in 2020 in connection with the murder of Liton Das, a trader in Unakoti.
Three jail guards and nine under-trial inmates were returning to Kanchanpur sub-jail in a prison van from the district and sessions court in Dharmanagar when the event occurred on Saturday.
A senior police official said, “Six out of nine under trial detainees alighted from the prison van and entered the jail premises. After getting off the vehicle, three convicts suspected of being active members of the NLFT fought the guards and left the scene.”
According to reports, a jail guard, Ranajoy Chakraborty, was injured in the attack, he said.
Meanwhile, an investigation into the situation is underway. Search operations have also been launched in North Tripura district, and along the state’s border with Assam and Mizoram.
