6.6 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Afghanistan

Guwahati: As many as 9 people were reported dead in Pakistan after a strong earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan on March 21.

Strong tremors were also felt in northern India and the national capital. According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicentre of the earthquake was 180 kilometres beneath the surface in Afghanistan’s Jurm.

An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale occurred 133 kilometres south-southeast of Fayzabad, Afghanistan at 10.17 p.m., according to the National Centre for Seismology.

More than 100 shock victims in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province were taken to hospitals in Pakistan, according to Bilal Faizi, the emergency services spokesperson for Pakistan.

According to reports, the Federal Government Polyclinic and the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) received an emergency alert from Pakistan’s Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel.
