Congress Slams PM Modi’s “Insensitivity” to Manipur’s Suffering

The Congress party has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his perceived “insensitivity” to the suffering of people in Manipur, where tensions erupted in parts of the state on June 7 night. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh targeted the prime minister on his official X handle, claiming that Modi’s silence on the issue is a testament to his callousness.

The situation in Manipur remains tense, with prohibitory orders imposed and internet services suspended in five Imphal valley districts. Violent protests erupted in the state after the arrest of a leader of the Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol, resulting in widespread unrest. Ramesh pointed out that the pain, distress, and agony of the people of Manipur continue unabated.

Ramesh criticized the government’s response to the crisis, claiming that the BJP “engineered a majority for itself alone” in the assembly elections in February 2022. He highlighted the subsequent violence in Manipur, which resulted in hundreds of deaths, thousands of displacements, and destruction of places of worship. The Congress leader also noted that despite the imposition of President’s Rule, the situation in the state has not improved.

Ramesh demanded that the prime minister visit Manipur and meet with political leaders and civil society organizations. He accused Modi of outsourcing the management of the state’s affairs to the Union Home Minister, who has failed to restore peace. The Congress general secretary slammed the prime minister’s “insensitivity” to the suffering of the people of Manipur, stating that it is truly shocking and defies understanding.
