What is the problem with Encounters?: Assam CM

Guwahati: Over the past few months there have been several instances of police encounters in Assam. The encounters saw a sudden rise in the state and some even had alleged these encounters to be fake. Following this, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the director-general of Assam Police. The report was sought based on a complaint alleging the encounters to be fake encounters.

Following all these, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was asked about the entire issue. The Chief Minister responding to the questions by the journalists said, “Where is the problem with the encounter? If there is a problem, the criminals should be questioned as to why they attempt to flee from police custody.”

He added that all the police personnel in the state have been given the authority to take actions against the “criminals” under legal proceedings. The CM further added that no person will be spared if they are found in any sort of crime.

He added that earlier the people knew that they would somehow manage to get a bailout of jail. “So they did not attempt to flee from police custody but now they know that once their crime is proven, there will be no way out. Knowing this the criminals try to escape from the police”, he added.
