Actor Shweta Tiwari booked for ‘hurting religious sentiments
Guwahati: A video of Shweta Tiwari’s statement has gone viral on social media, in which she allegedly referred to God while speaking about her undergarment. Her co-actors were also present when she made the remark during an interaction with media persons.
Tiwari made the statement while promoting her online series “Show Stopper” in Bhopal on Wednesday. Rohit Roy, Digangana Suryavanshi, and Sourabh Raaj Jain play the lead roles in the series.
However, police here on Friday filed a complaint against television actor Shweta Tiwari.
After Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra directed the city police to examine Ms. Tiwari’s remark and provide a report within 24 hours, the complaint was filed against her.
“A case was filed against Shweta Tiwari on January 28 under IPC section 295 (A) (deliberate and malicious conduct intended to offend religious sensibilities of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs),” a Shyamla Hills police station official said.
The lawsuit was brought after a local man, Sonu Prajapati, filed a complaint alleging that the actress had offended his religious emotions with her remark.
“We will summon Ms. Tiwari to the police station by sending her a notice in the mail or dispatching a police team to her residence to serve notice,” he said.
The offence is non-bailable, but because it carries a sentence of less than seven years, no arrest can be made, according to the Supreme Court’s prior directive, he noted.
According to reports, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kotwali) Bittu Sharma said that the star will be formally detained, but that she may receive release from the police station itself, following which she would have to have the matter resolved by a competent court.
