SC: Navjot Singh Sidhu Gets 1 Year Jail In 1998 Road Rage Case

Guwahati: Congress leader and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu might face up to a year in prison in connection with a road rage complaint filed against him in 1988.

The cricketer-turned-politician received a one-year term from the Supreme Court in connection with the case.

As per reports, Sidhu may face a year in prison if convicted in the road rage case, which was filed against the politician over three decades ago.

The case was filled by the family members of the deceased who was allegedly in a road rage incident 34 years ago.

The Supreme Court on May 19 granted a review of its May 2018 judgement exonerating Congress leader Navjot Singh Siddhu in a 1988 road rage case in which Patiala resident Gurnam Singh died after an alleged scuffle with the Congress leader.

Following the court’s decision, Sidhu will be brought into custody by the Punjab police, as ordered by the court. Sidhu has now been sentenced to the maximum penalty under Indian Penal Code Section 323 (IPC).

Earlier, the Congress politician was only fined Rs 1000 in a 1988 road rage incident. The Supreme Court overturned the judgement of the Haryana and Punjab High Court convicting Sidhu of culpable homicide in May 2018.

Sidhu would have been sentenced to three years in prison if the Supreme Court had upheld the 2018 conviction. Instead, the Supreme Court found him guilty of endangering an elderly person.

65-year-old Gurnam Singh was killed in 1988 during a battle with Navjot Singh Sidhu. Sidhu is said to have beaten Singh in the head, resulting in his death.

It needs to be mentioned that Sidhu is scheduled to surrender in front of the court and be sentenced to one year in prison in connection with the road rage case.
