Items Navjot Singh Sidhu will get in Patiala jail, Check list

Guwahati: Navjot Singh Sidhu, a cricketer-turned-politician was taken to Patiala Central Jail after surrendering before a Patiala court on Friday.

After complaining of chest pain earlier in the day, Sidhu was taken to Patiala’s Mata Kaushalya Hospital for a medical evaluation.

The Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced Sidhu to one year in prison in a 1988 road rage case.

According to reports, the former Punjab Congress president at Patiala jail will be given a table, a chair, two turbans, a cupboard, a blanket, three pieces of undergarments, two towels, a mosquito net, a pen, a notepad, a pair of shoes, two bed-sheets, four pairs of kurta-pajamas, and two pillow covers.

Sidhu’s prisoner number is 241383 and he has been assigned barrack number 7, reports said.

Sidhu was previously fined Rs 1,000 and now faces the maximum penalty under Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Supreme Court of India overturned a Punjab and Haryana High Court judgement convicting Sidhu of culpable homicide and sentenced him to three years in prison on May 15, 2018, finding him guilty of causing harm to the victim identified Gurnam Singh, a senior citizen.

However, in September 2018, the Supreme Court decided to hear a review petition filed by the victim’s relatives and issued a notice to Sidhu.

Earlier this year, Sidhu’s wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu said that right before the Punjab elections the issue was being pursued at the request of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikramjit Majithia.

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the family of Gurnam Singh’s request that Sidhu be found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Indian Penal Code. However, the judge gave him the maximum term for the crimes: three years in prison.
