South Korea: 151 Killed, 82 Injured in Halloween Stampede

Guwahati: In a horrific stampede, at least 151 people were killed and 82 others were injured  during Halloween celebrations in Itaewon district of South Korea’s Seoul, on Saturday.

The emergency response meeting for the deadly stampede was presided over by South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol on Sunday, according to the officials.

According to reports, the incident took place when a huge crowd of people went to an Itaewon pub after hearing an unidentified celebrity visited there.

The crowded Halloween celebrations in Seoul occurred after the covid restrictions were lifted, according to the local authorities. More than a lakh people attended the celebrations and it is anticipated that the number of fatalities would keep growing.

At least 81 calls from persons with respiratory problems were received by emergency personnel, according to the Yonhap News Agency in South Korea.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered the emergency medical team to be sent to the area and said hospital beds should be set up to reduce casualties, his office said.

The President also proclaimed a day of national mourning and commanded that flags be lowered in response to the disaster.

Investigation into the accident’s precise cause is still ongoing by the authorities.
