Indian-origin engineer wins Nat Geo’s ‘Pictures of the year’ contest

Guwahati: Karthik Subramaniam, an American software engineer of Indian descent, won the prestigious National Geographic “Pictures of The Year” prize with his image named “Dancing of the Eagles.”

The image submitted by Subramaniam was chosen from among approximately 5,000 others. He won the grand prize on Friday. He appeared in the magazine’s May issue with some of Nat Geo’s top photographers as a result.

The prize-winning photograph showed a bald eagle frightening its fellow birds to grab a prime log while salmon hunting in the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Alaska.

Media reports state that he took the picture during a weeklong photography trip to Alaska.

The cacophony of bald eagles along the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve’s shore on the last day of his journey caught his eye. Every fall, when about 3,000 bald eagles arrive in time for the salmon run, that location hosts the largest bald eagle populations in the entire globe.

Photographer Karthik Subramaniam said, “Hours of observing their patterns and behavior helped me capture moments like these.” “Every year in November, hundreds of bald eagles gather at Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve near Haines, Alaska, to feast on salmon. I visited there last two Novembers to photograph them,” he added.

Karthika, a software developer living in California, started taking pictures of the nature in 2020. His Instagram account is filled with gorgeous images of nature. His ‘Dance of the Eagles’ will be the cover-page of National Geographic’s May edition.
