Nagaland: NDPP president & general secretary of Mon district placed under immediate suspension

Guwahati: The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) president Khoiwang Wangsa and general secretary M. Phongwang of Nagaland’s Mon region have been suspended immediately from the party due to their alleged unruly behavior.

A notice by the NDPP mentioned, “Mr. Khoiwang Wangsa, President, NDPP Mon region and Mr. M. Phongwang, General Secretary, NDPP Mon region are hereby placed under immediate suspension from the party for acting in contravention of party’s directive and for indisciplinary conduct”.

As the Neiphiu Rio government is scheduled to take office on March 7, leaders of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Mon district have demanded that three of their elected MLAs be given important ministries in the new administration.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister designate Neiphiu Rio and BJP national secretary and Northeast co-convenor Rituraj Sinha, the leaders of both parties from Mon district have urged their respective party leaderships to allot the Home department to Tizit MLA P Paiwang Konyak, the Family Welfare department to Tapi MLA Noke Wangnao, and the Roads and Bridges department to Tehok MLA CL John.

With NDPP winning 25 seats and BJP taking 13 in the recently held elections for the 14th Nagaland Legislature, the NDPP-BJP combination easily secured a majority. The NDPP-BJP alliance will take office for a second term following the creation of the government in Nagaland.

The party leaderships are under pressure to resolve the matter before the formation of the government as a result of the Mon district unit’s demand for important posts for their elected MLAs. It is yet unclear if the parties will grant their request or not.
