NPF Seeks Broad-Based Consultation on Urban Body Elections in Nagaland

Guwahati: The Naga People’s Front (NPF) has requested a widespread consultation for the purpose of discussing urban body elections.

The NPF declared on Saturday that prior to holding the civic body elections in Nagaland a thorough dialogue with all the stakeholders is necessary especially with regard to taxation on land and properties.

It stated that until a compromise was reached the municipal and town council elections which the administration had announced on March 9 may be postponed.

The NPF underlined its grave worry on the growing conflict between numerous groups, civil society and the current administration over the holding of elections to the urban local bodies in a press release.

In the lead-up to the ULB elections with a 33 percent reservation of seats for women, the party claimed it did not want the same story of 2017 to be repeated head-on, including the burning down of the government offices in Kohima, vandalism of the candidates’ private residences, excommunication of some of the candidates from their respective localities and the loss of two precious lives.

It further said, “Hence, the government of the day ought to think twice before rushing to conduct the election.”

“The new proposal of the government for reservation of chairperson’s posts in the ULBs for women is devoid of logic,” it added.
