Assam: Five More Pro-Khalistani Leaders Flown to Assam Jail
Guwahati: At least five pro-Khalistani leaders have been flown from Punjab to Dibrugrah in Assam.
The five people were transported on a special flight on Tuesday to the Mohanbari Airport in Dibrugarh. The five detainees were transported to the Dibrugarh Central Prison under heavy police guard.
With this, there are now 10 pro-Khalistani leaders held in the jail in Dibrugarh.
One of the five convicts who have been transported to Dibrugarh today is reportedly accused of being the driver of “Waris De Punjab” leader Amritpal Singh who earlier surrendered.
One more pro-Khalistani leader was transferred to the central jail in Dibrugarh early on Tuesday. Despite the prisoner’s identity has not been made public by the authorities it is widely believed that he is Harjit Singh the uncle of Amritpal Singh.
According to the Punjab Police, Harjit Singh and his driver Harpreet Singh turned themselves up late Sunday night in Jalandhar.
On Sunday, four aides of absconding Sikh radical preacher Amritpal Singh were brought to Dibrugarh. They are Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Pradhanmantri Bajeka are currently lodged at the Dibrugarh Central Jail.
In order to arrest the extreme preacher as soon as possible, the Punjab Police has strengthened security. A month ago, the leader of “Waris De Punjab” and his supporters burst into a police station brandishing weapons and swords to demand the release of one of his aides. In the altercation, six police officers suffered injuries.
The suspension of mobile internet and SMS services in Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Moga, Sangrur, Amritsar’s Ajnala sub-division and a few locations in Mohali has been extended by the Punjab government until Thursday noon. According to a directive from the department of home affairs and justice, the barriers will be removed from the remainder of the state starting at midday on Tuesday. The government put the restrictions on mobile internet and SMS services on Saturday, the same day that the state’s police force began a significant crackdown against extremist preacher Amritpal Singh and members of his organisation.
