Assam CM: Govt to Take Initiatives to Celebrate Saat Bihu From Next Year

Guwahati: Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that the state will take initiatives to celebrate Saat Bihu in 2024.

CM Sarma gave a one-time grant to the 10-year-old Rongali Bihu Celebration Committees of Assam at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

A total of 2114 Bihu committees received grants totaling Rs. 1.5 lakh with 120 of those coming from Kamrup (Metropolitan).

CM Sarma stated during his speech that no one is permitted to celebrate Bihu after May 16.

He said, “From May 16, Bihu will not be celebrated in the state, however, other cultural programmes could be held. Bihu committees should take action in this regard.”

CM Sarma asked Bihu committees to take part in traditional husori rather than soliciting chanda (donations).

The chief minister emphasised the issue of drinking on stage once more and urged the Bihu committees to pay close attention to it.

Meanwhile, CM Sarma asked citizens to observe Rongali Bihu during Saat Bihu.

He said the state government will take an initiative to celebrate Saat Bihu from next year.

It should be noted that Rongali Bihu also known as Saat Bihu is a seven-day celebration.

The seven days are described as: Goru Bihu, Manuh Bihu, Gosain Bihu, Tator Bihu, Nangolor Bihu, Jiyori or Senehi Bihu and Sera Bihu
