Fugitive rhino poacher was arrested in Nagaland
Guwahati: On Thursday, rumours surfaced that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had captured a rhino poacher from Nagaland who had fled.
At the behest of the Assam government, the CBI conducted operations against five suspects engaged in a rhino poaching, according to sources.
An evading rhino poacher from the Lhomithi area of Dimapur was captured by the CBI during this operation.
The suspect, Raidang Engti, a native of Dimapur, has been named.
The detained rhino poacher will appear before the Dimapur court with regard to his role in rhino poaching.
Notably, the CBI opened an inquiry and registered a case in 2012 at the request of the Assam government.
The carcass of a rhinoceros believed to have been slain by suspected poachers was discovered at Longkoi Tisso Gaon in Karbi Anglong.
A charge-sheet was submitted against five suspects in the rhino poaching case later in 2018.
The remains of a rhino poacher who fled police custody earlier this month was discovered floating in the Brahmaputra River in Assam.
Saidul Islam, the poacher, reportedly escaped police custody while being brought to Kaziranga National Park’s Bagori range to find the rhino carcass whose horn had been stolen.
