Manipur: CM Biren Singh’s Event Venue Set on Fire by Miscreants
Guwahati: Tension gripped churachandpur district in Manipur after an angry mob vandalized and set on fire a venue where Chief Minister N Biren Singh was scheduled to visit today.
The tribals in the district opposed the chief minister’s visit to churachandpur over the BJP government’s move to demolish three churches last month terming those illegal constructions.
Section 144 Cr.PC was imposed in churachandpur district and mobile internet service was snapped in the district to stop further spread of the violence.
Chief minister Biren Singh was scheduled at inaugurate a sports complex cum gym at New Lamka area in churachandpur district.
Meanwhile, in opposition to the government’s land survey and church demolition, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) had called for a complete shutdown in Churachandpur district on Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The forum had repeatedly sent a document to the state government outlining their concerns and frustrations regarding the survey that the government had conducted regarding Reserved Forests/Protected Forests/Wetlands/Wildlife and the displacement of villages. They denounced the government’s disregard for and disrespect for the significance of churches to people of the Christian faith.
