Odisha Train Accident: Change in Electronic Interlocking Led to Triple Train Crash, Says Railway Minister
National Desk, 4 June: After visiting the scene of the triple train accident in Balasore, Odisha which left 288 people dead and more than 1100 injured, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on June 4 that the incident’s main cause had been found.
According to the minister, the investigation into the train disaster is complete and the rail safety commissioner will soon submit the reports.
Minister added, the commissioner of railway safety has looked into the situation and a report is awaited. However, the accident’s root cause and the responsible for it have been found. Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “The accident occurred due to a change in electronic interlocking. Right now our focus is on restoration.”
He said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi inspected the site yesterday. We will try to restore the track today. All bodies have been removed. Our target is to finish the restoration work by Wednesday morning so the trains can start running on this track.”
The electronic interlocking (EI) system uses a microprocessor to read inputs from the yard and panel process them in accordance with the selection table in a fail-safe way and produce the desired output. According to the ministry, this technology is an alternative to the traditional Relay Interlocking system (PI & RPI).
