UPPL Leader, Ex-NDFB Member Arrested in Udalguri for Illegal Sand-Syndicate Involvement

Guwahati, 23rd July: Udalguri police have apprehended a ruling UPPL (United People’s Party Liberal) member of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) on suspicion of operating an illegal sand-stone syndicate in the area. The arrest was part of a targeted drive led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Supriya Das against the illicit sand syndicate.

Two people, Ravitram Boro and Akash Basumatary, were detained in Gitibari Mahal as part of the operation in relation to the illicit sand mining activities.

Ravitram Boro is a former member of the NDFB (National Democratic Front of Bodoland), whereas Akash Basumatary is thought to be connected to the UPPL party.

Multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have been used to charge the detainees, including 386 (extortion by inducing fear of death or great bodily harm), 323 (voluntarily causing harm), 332 (voluntarily causing harm to prevent a public servant from performing his duties), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention).

Following their arrest, both individuals have been remanded to jail custody, and further investigations are currently underway.

The crackdown on illegal sand mining aims to preserve the environment and combat unlawful practices that exploit natural resources in the region. The authorities are determined to take strict action against those involved in such activities to protect the ecological balance and maintain sustainable development in Udalguri and its surroundings.
