MHA Designates Canada-Based Babbar Khalsa International Leader as “Individual Terrorist”
National Desk, 30th December: India’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has taken a crucial step by declaring Lakhbir Singh Landa, a Canada-based gangster and Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) leader, as an “individual terrorist” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Strategic Move in Counterterrorism Efforts
This designation signifies a pivotal move in India’s relentless efforts to combat terrorism and associated activities.
Lakhbir Singh Landa’s Background and Criminal Activities
Originally from Punjab’s Tarn Taran district and now residing in Canada, Landa is infamous for orchestrating arms and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) smuggling from Pakistan into India. He is identified as the mastermind behind the RPG attack on Punjab Police intelligence headquarters in Mohali.
Ongoing Pursuit by Punjab Police and NIA
Both Punjab Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are actively pursuing Landa in connection with the Mohali attack on May 9 of the previous year.
Highlighting Landa’s Involvement in Terrorism
MHA’s notification emphasizes Landa’s involvement in supplying IEDs, weapons, and explosives across the border to execute terrorist activities within Punjab.
Wide Range of Criminal Implications
Landa is implicated in various criminal cases, including the formation of terror modules, extortion, targeted killings, planting IEDs, and smuggling weapons and narcotics. Illicit funds from these activities are suspected to fund further acts of terrorism in Punjab and other parts of India.
International Connections and Pursuit
Landa’s connections with pro-Khalistan elements in Canada, such as Hardeep Singh Nijjar and Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, have been noted. A lookout circular and a reward for information leading to his capture were issued in 2021 by the NIA.
Government’s Resolve Against Global Threats
The MHA’s declaration underscores the Indian government’s unwavering commitment to addressing threats posed by individuals and organizations involved in terrorism globally.
Warning to Perpetrators
The action against Lakhbir Singh Landa serves as a clear warning to individuals engaged in similar activities, reinforcing that they will be pursued and held accountable for actions against the state.
