Assam: Papon Set to Dazzle at Khelo India University Games 2023 Opening Ceremony in Guwahati

Guwahati, 17th February: Amidst anticipation, Guwahati is set to host the grand opening ceremony of the fourth edition of the Khelo India University Games 2023 Ashtalakshmi. Adding to the excitement, Assam’s renowned musical artist, Papon, will grace the event with his performance on February 19th at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Sarusajai Sports Complex, Guwahati. With his melodious voice, Papon promises an unforgettable musical extravaganza for the audience and participants alike.

The Hon’ble Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Shri Anurag Singh Thakur will attend the Khelo India University Games alongside Assam Chief Minister, Shri Himata Biswa Sarma. The Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inspire the athletes through a video message. This marks the fourth edition of the ever-growing Games, with close to 4500 athletes from 200 Universities participating in KIUG 2023.

Assam’s sports and youth welfare minister, Shrimati Nandita Garlosa, expressed that Papon’s inclusion will enhance the opening ceremony. “Papon is a youth icon of India, and Guwahati will witness his live performance. We have had legendary musicians like Bhupen Hazarika, but good music transcends generations. Both Hazarika and Papon are unique in their own ways,” said Shrimati Garlosa.

The grand opening, welcoming all attendees free of charge, will feature a thematic showcase highlighting the values of unity, diversity, and sportsmanship. Additionally, the vibrant culture of Assam will take center stage with captivating displays of indigenous arts, enriching the cultural experience.

The KIUG will feature 20 sports disciplines over the next fortnight, with competitions held in 18 venues across Guwahati and six other Northeastern cities. Guwahati will host a total of 16 disciplines during KIUG 2023, reflecting the state government’s commitment to providing world-class sporting infrastructure. Events include athletics, rugby, basketball, volleyball, swimming, badminton, and more.

Dibrugarh University boasts the largest contingent from Assam with six members, while Manipur University leads the representation from the Northeast region with 19 athletes.

The Khelo India University Games 2023 Ashtalakshmi commenced with kabaddi matches at the Sarusajai Stadium on Saturday. Eight teams divided into two pools are competing for glory.

KIUG is part of the Indian government’s Khelo India initiative, launched in 2016, focusing on promoting grassroots sports and identifying young talents nationwide.
