Assam’s Mainaguri Village: From Militancy-Hit to Weaving Hub
Guwahati, 4th May: Mainaguri village, nestled approximately 50 km from Kokrajhar town in Assam’s Kokrajhar district, has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a militancy-hit area to a thriving hub of weavers. Situated near the Indo-Bhutan border, the village has earned the moniker of ‘Weavers Village,’ symbolizing resilience and progress.
Home to 66 families predominantly from the Rabha tribe community, Mainaguri has witnessed significant changes in recent years. Once plagued by the challenges of militancy, which impacted its peace and prosperity, the village has now emerged as a beacon of development and economic growth, thanks to concerted efforts and initiatives.
Reflecting on the positive changes, Elisha Rabha, a resident, shared with ANI, “Earlier, there was this (militancy problem), but now we are living in a peaceful environment and we are happy. The income has also increased.” This sentiment encapsulates the village’s journey from turmoil to tranquility, showcasing the resilience of its inhabitants.
The flourishing weaving industry not only provides sustainable livelihoods but also celebrates the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the Rabha tribe and the state of Assam.
