Nagaland: New Order Strengthens Management of Plastic Waste and Non-Degradable Garbage
Northeast Desk, 14th June: In a proactive move aimed at curbing environmental hazards stemming from the improper disposal of plastic waste and non-degradable garbage, a new directive has been issued under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
Under this order, the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) across various districts are mandated to conduct assessments of the vulnerability of water bodies within their jurisdictions. These assessments will specifically evaluate the environmental impact caused by the irresponsible disposal of plastic waste and non-degradable garbage. Based on these evaluations, the DDMAs are tasked with implementing targeted measures for the prevention and mitigation of these hazards.
Additionally, the DDMAs are directed to spearhead educational and awareness initiatives aimed at local communities. These efforts will focus on educating the public about the proper management of plastic waste and non-degradable garbage in vulnerable areas. By fostering community engagement, the goal is to empower individuals and local groups to actively participate in preventing and mitigating environmental risks associated with improper waste disposal.
Moreover, the order underscores the importance of reviewing and reinforcing existing committees and directives related to plastic waste management. DDMAs are instructed to meticulously examine the effectiveness of current measures and take necessary steps to enhance their enforcement. This includes submitting detailed reports on the actions taken at the district level to combat environmental hazards caused by the irresponsible disposal of plastic waste and non-degradable garbage.
By leveraging the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, this initiative aims to strengthen local responses to environmental challenges, ensuring sustainable management of waste and safeguarding water bodies from detrimental effects. The implementation of these measures reflects a concerted effort towards promoting environmental stewardship and resilience within communities across the districts.
