Assam: Gaurav Gogoi Raises Alarm on Majuli’s Erosion Crisis

Guwahati, 6th July: Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Indian National Congress in the Lok Sabha and a three-time Member of Parliament from Assam, has voiced serious concerns about the escalating erosion crisis affecting Majuli. In a recent social media statement, Gogoi highlighted the severe impact of erosion exacerbated by recent floods in the region.

“People of Assam are distressed due to the recent floods and erosion. The level of erosion that is taking place every year in Majuli is scary,” Gogoi emphasized, pointing out that erosion causes more long-term damage than floods. He noted that essential infrastructure such as villages, schools, farmlands, homes, and health centers are gradually being swallowed by the rivers.

Gogoi further elaborated on the social implications, stating, “It is the poor, especially women and children, who face the greatest brunt from climate change. We need massive investment in flood and erosion management in Assam.” He called for a collaborative effort involving international institutions, local communities, district and state administrations, and the central government to address this pressing issue.

Majuli, recognized as the world’s largest river island and a cultural hub of Assam, is under severe threat from relentless erosion by the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries. The island’s rich cultural heritage, central to Neo-Vaishnavite culture and known as the ‘Cultural Capital’ of the state, attracts tourists globally. However, this heritage is at risk due to erosion, which not only devastates the physical landscape but also threatens the island’s unique cultural identity.

The recurring floods and erosion in Majuli underscore the urgent need for comprehensive flood and erosion management strategies to protect communities and preserve its cultural significance amidst mounting environmental challenges.
