Northeast 10th July: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has announced a landmark infrastructure initiative, the Frontier Highway project, aimed at bolstering India’s defence capabilities along the India-China border while advancing the Centre’s Act East Policy.
Estimated at ₹40,000 crore, the Frontier Highway project is slated to bring substantial strategic and economic transformations to the region. Rijiju assured that adequate compensation will be provided for land acquisition, addressing concerns of local communities affected by the development.
The highway will be constructed within 20 km of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and international borders, spanning a total length of 1,500 km. An additional 1,000 km of roads are planned to enhance connectivity further. This ambitious network represents one of India’s most significant and challenging road construction endeavors.
Strategically, the Frontier Highway will connect vital locations including Tawang, Mago, Upper Subansiri, Upper Siang, Mechuka, Tuting, Dibang Valley, Kibithoo, Changlang, and Dong. The project is a collaborative effort involving agencies such as the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has outlined a phased approach for approvals and land acquisition, targeting initial completion by March 2025 and full operational readiness by March 2027.
The project is expected to significantly enhance strategic connectivity and fortify India’s defence infrastructure along the China border, marking a pivotal advancement in safeguarding national borders and fostering regional development initiatives.
