Government Launches Pilot Scheme for Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims in Chandigarh and Assam

Guwahati, 1st August: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced a pilot scheme in Chandigarh and Assam to provide cashless treatment to victims of road accidents caused by motor vehicles. This initiative, implemented in collaboration with the National Health Authority (NHA), aims to offer immediate and comprehensive medical care to accident victims on any category of road.

Under this scheme, eligible victims will receive Health Benefits Packages related to trauma and polytrauma care at empanelled hospitals under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). The coverage includes medical expenses up to Rs. 1.5 lakh for a maximum period of seven days from the date of the accident.

Administered under the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, constituted as per section 164B of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the scheme’s financial structure and usage guidelines are defined in the Central Motor Vehicles (Motor Vehicle Accident Fund) Rules, 2022.

The National Health Authority, in coordination with local police, empanelled hospitals, the State Health Agency, the National Informatics Centre, and the General Insurance Council, is responsible for the scheme’s implementation. This coordinated effort ensures that the program extends support to accident victims regardless of where the accident occurs, aligning with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, provided this information in a written reply to the Lok Sabha today, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety and emergency medical response in India.
