Sikkim Hosts Annual Stakeholders’ Coordination Meeting for Science Centre Development
Northeast Desk, 4th July: The Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology on August 4 under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), organized its Annual Stakeholders’ Coordination Meeting at the Sikkim Science Centre in Namli, Ranipool. The meeting aimed at discussing welfare and development initiatives for the centre.
The programme began with the inauguration of the Community Facility Centre (Scheduled Tribe Cell Laboratory), supported by the Science for Equity Empowerment and Development (SEED Division). The event was officiated by Sonam Tshering Venchungpa, MLA of Martam Rumtek Constituency.
The meeting, chaired by MLA Venchungpa, saw the participation of Dr. Sandeep Tambe, Secretary of the Science and Technology Department, DT Bhutia, Principal Director, DST, DG Shrestha, Principal Director, DST, along with secretaries of Zilla Panchayat and Gram Panchayat presidents. Officials from the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, senior representatives from various departments, corporate bodies, and principals of schools and colleges also attended.
During the event, the MLA, along with senior officials, visited the Science Centre’s facilities, including the 3D Theatre, Planetarium, and Innovation Hub. In his address, Venchungpa thanked the attendees and emphasized the need to make the science centre more vibrant and interactive, enhancing awareness among tourists and locals. He also highlighted the importance of integrating the centre’s activities with the school curriculum.
Dr. Sandeep Tambe elaborated on the agenda and emphasized collaborative efforts from stakeholders to invigorate the centre. He discussed the importance of increasing awareness and implementing a feedback mechanism for continuous improvement.
Sanman Subba, Assistant Director of the Science and Technology Department, presented a brief overview of the Sikkim Science Centre, detailing its objectives to educate children through interactive learning and various science awareness programmes. He highlighted the facilities, including a unique gallery, children’s activity corner, 3D theatre, career counseling, and the innovation hub.
An interactive session followed, led by Dr. Tambe, DT Bhutia, and DG Shrestha, focusing on key topics such as:
- Collaboration with the Education Department to facilitate school visits from all districts.
- Addressing trespassing and land encroachment issues.
- Inclusion of the Science Centre in the Sikkim Tourism Map.
- Enhancing the vibrancy and interactivity of the Science Centre.
- Mobilizing local public visits through Gram Panchayats, travel agents, and other stakeholders.
- Seeking industrial support for the centre.
- Upgrading and modernizing the Science Centre and Innovation Hub.
- Promoting membership drives and developing the Science Park.
The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by Suman Thapa, Assistant Director, DST, acknowledging the contributions and participation of all stakeholders.
