Assam Congress Chief Criticizes CM Sarma for ‘Hindu-Muslim Politics’
Guwahati, 6th August: Assam Congress state chief Bhupen Kumar Borah has sharply criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for focusing on ‘Hindu-Muslim politics,’ asserting that the people of Assam are not interested in such a communal agenda. Borah’s comments, made on Monday, reflect growing tensions as the 2026 assembly elections approach.
In a press interaction, Borah stated, “The Chief Minister engages only in Hindu-Muslim politics. However, the people of Assam are not at all interested in such a communal agenda, which was proven during the Lok Sabha elections.”
Sarma had recently announced plans to introduce legislation for life imprisonment in cases of ‘love jihad’ and proposed measures to safeguard land rights and government jobs for Indigenous people. Borah criticized these moves as attempts to communalize issues rather than addressing them through legislative processes.
Borah also took aim at Sarma’s economic policies, accusing the government of relying on beneficiary schemes and liquor sales for revenue. He alleged that the government was misusing state media and publicity machinery to promote communal ideas, and criticized the distribution of liquor shop licenses to local leaders.
The Congress state chief pledged that the united opposition of 18 parties in Assam would maintain their alliance and contest elections as a bloc leading up to the 2026 assembly polls. He promised further activities to highlight the perceived failures of the current government.
