Nagaland: Assam Rifles Addresses Angami Students’ Union’s Bandh Following Alleged Assault

Northeast Desk, 11th August: The Assam Rifles has issued a response to the Angami Students’ Union’s (ASU) immediate shutdown and indefinite bandh, which was declared after an alleged assault on their president by Assam Rifles personnel on August 9.

The Assam Rifles described the incident as ‘unfortunate,’ noting that preliminary findings indicate a misunderstanding. A soldier, unaware that the vehicle he approached belonged to the ASU president, engaged in an argument due to heightened security measures ahead of Independence Day.

An investigation is currently underway, and the Assam Rifles has assured that the situation is being addressed. They are actively collaborating with local organizations, including the Angami Public Organization (APO), Angami Youth Organization (AYO), and ASU, to resolve the issue.

In retaliation, the ASU has initiated a shutdown and indefinite bandh in Angami areas from August 10 and has instructed all paramilitary forces, particularly Assam Rifles, to refrain from entering these areas. They have also demanded the suspension of operations at the Assam Rifles camp in D Block.

The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has strongly condemned the alleged assault, with NSF President Eno Khriesamhalie David Mere condemning it as a violation of rights and an affront to the Naga community.
