Zomi Council and ZSF Urge Manipur Governor for Separate Political Administration Amid Escalating Ethnic Tensions

Northeast Desk, 12th August: In a significant appeal, the Zomi Council, Headquarters, and the Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF), General Headquarters, have submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, calling for the establishment of a separate political administration for the Zo ethnic community. The memorandum underscores the urgent need for the Governor to fulfill his constitutional duties under Article 371C, citing the growing ethnic divide between the Meitei community and the Zo tribes in Manipur.

The Zomi Council emphasized the importance of the Governor formally reporting the deteriorating situation to the Union Government, to ensure that the deepening rift between the communities is officially recognized. The call for a separate administration reflects the Zo community’s concerns over their lack of political representation and the need for greater administrative autonomy.

Simultaneously, the ZSF’s memorandum highlighted the critical need for the Governor’s intervention to address the ongoing human rights violations faced by the Zo ethnic tribes. The federation pointed out the systemic denial of equal opportunities in education and employment, describing it as a violation of constitutional rights. They urged the Governor to take immediate action to protect the rights and dignity of the Zo community, ensuring they receive fair treatment and opportunities as guaranteed by the Constitution of India.

The joint appeal by the Zomi Council and ZSF reflects the mounting tensions and demands for justice and autonomy from the Zo ethnic community amid the broader ethnic challenges in the state.
