Meghalaya Government Begins Rehabilitation of Hawkers to Transform Khyndailad into Pedestrian Zone

Northeast Desk, 14th August: The Meghalaya government has commenced a major initiative to rehabilitate over 200 hawkers and street vendors from Khyndailad, as part of a broader plan to convert the area into a pedestrian-friendly zone. This move is aimed at enhancing Shillong’s appeal as a music hub and a tourist destination.

Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced that the process of relocating hawkers has already begun, with the state government awaiting details on various trades. Lyngdoh emphasized that in the interest of diversity, no more than two vendors from the same trade will be allowed to operate in the same location. Additionally, the government is focusing on implementing safety measures for workers who use hazardous sources of energy like fire.

Initially, the government had set August 15 as the target date for the rehabilitation, but Lyngdoh noted that the identification of trades and individual vendors took longer than expected. Despite the delay, he assured that the process would be completed with the establishment of enhanced facilities and designated vending zones.

The rehabilitation effort is a collaborative venture between the tourism and urban affairs departments. Various vending zones have been identified, and the next step will involve allotting spaces to the hawkers. Lyngdoh expressed confidence that the relocation would be finalized soon, and alternative plans are being considered to ensure a smooth transition.

This initiative is part of a larger Rs 216 crore project under the Shillong Smart City initiative, announced by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar. The plan includes the development of a multi-complex on the site of the former Meghalaya Transport Corporation office in Police Bazar, which is expected to significantly boost the area’s commercial and tourism potential.
