Assam: Bharat Bandh Over SC-ST Reservation Ruling Sees Minimal Impact

Assam, August 21, 2024 The Bharat Bandh called by various groups on Wednesday in protest of the Supreme Court’s August 1 decision regarding SC-ST reservations had little effect on daily life in Assam. Despite the nationwide call for a shutdown, normalcy prevailed across the state.

Schools, offices, and businesses remained open, with reports indicating near-full attendance. Public transportation, including long-distance buses and trains, operated without disruption, maintaining their regular schedules.

The bandh, organized by 21 groups opposing the Supreme Court’s ruling on community-based reservation, aimed to express discontent over what they believe undermines the principles of affirmative action for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. However, in Assam, the protest failed to gain significant traction, and daily activities continued unaffected.
