Sikkim Takes a Leap into the Digital Age at World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly 2024

Gangtok: In a bid to align with global technological advancements, Tshering T. Bhutia, Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Commerce, and Industries, represented Sikkim at the prestigious World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly 2024 (WTSA-2024) and the Indian Mobile Congress 2024.

Both events were held in New Delhi under the auspices of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and drew participation from global leaders in the telecommunications sector.

Guided by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Sikkim is making significant strides in embracing telecommunications developments, recognizing their pivotal role in driving economic and social progress. Bhutia’s presence at these international forums highlights Sikkim’s commitment to digital transformation and its ambition to stay at the forefront of technological integration.

The WTSA-2024 was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who served as the Chief Guest. In his keynote address, Modi underscored India’s leadership in global telecommunications, emphasizing the necessity of establishing robust standards for emerging technologies.

The assembly serves as an international platform for defining technical standards in telecommunications, which are essential for ensuring interoperability and fostering innovation in a rapidly changing digital landscape.

Simultaneously, the Indian Mobile Congress 2024, one of Asia’s largest technology events, brought together key stakeholders from the telecommunications industry, government, and academia.

This congress provided a vital platform for discussions on the future of mobile connectivity, focusing on innovations in 5G technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI). Industry leaders and policymakers explored avenues to accelerate India’s growth as a global technology hub.

Bhutia’s participation underscores Sikkim’s proactive approach in harnessing digital opportunities, paving the way for enhanced connectivity and technological advancements in the state.

As Sikkim continues to invest in its digital infrastructure, the government aims to create a more interconnected and technologically adept society, benefiting both residents and the broader economic landscape.
