NEHU Inquiry Intensifies: Students, Faculty Demand Administrative Overhaul

Shillong: A high-powered inquiry committee, appointed by the Ministry of Education, has delved deeper into the alleged administrative lapses at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).

The two-member panel, headed by former UGC chairman Prof. D P Singh and former Assam University VC Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, is currently conducting extensive consultations with various stakeholders on campus.

Student and faculty bodies have presented compelling evidence highlighting a series of administrative irregularities, including controversial appointments, a significant decline in the university’s ranking, infrastructural neglect, and a general lack of administrative responsiveness.

“We have provided irrefutable proof of administrative misconduct by the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, over the past three years,” said Sandy Sohtun, president of the Northeast Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU). “His return to the university is absolutely unacceptable,” he added, emphasizing the collective stance of student organizations.

The North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has also expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of the institution. “We have presented comprehensive evidence of systematic institutional decay under the current leadership,” said Prof. Lakhon Kma, president of NEHUTA.

The inquiry committee’s findings are eagerly awaited and are expected to have a profound impact on the future of NEHU. The university community, including students, faculty, and staff, is united in their demand for a complete overhaul of the administrative structure and leadership.
