Sikkim Governor Visits Doklam, Interacts with Army Personnel and Locals

Sikkim: Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur visited Doklam, a strategic area situated at an altitude of 15,600 feet, where he interacted with Army personnel stationed at the border.

The visit, accompanied by Rajasthan’s Forest and Environment Minister Sanjay Sharma, was part of the governor’s engagement to review the region’s security and development initiatives. Doklam gained prominence in 2017 following a standoff between Indian and Chinese troops.

The governor’s tour commenced with a ceremonial reception at 8th Mile JN Road, where locals and members of the Kyongnosla Gram Panchayat, along with officers from the Forest Department and Sikkim Police, warmly greeted him. As a gesture of environmental conservation, Governor Mathur planted an oak tree, emphasizing the importance of preserving the region’s natural ecosystem. He also engaged with the panchayat members and residents, discussing developmental priorities and conservation efforts.

Upon reaching Doklam, Mathur was received by Major General MS Rathore, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 17th Mountain Division. Addressing the Army personnel, the governor expressed profound gratitude for their tireless service to the nation. “Your bravery, courage, and unwavering commitment are instrumental in safeguarding the country’s security and honor,” he said, commending their sacrifices and dedication.

The governor also made a stop at Kupup, home to the world’s highest golf course, highlighting the unique heritage and strategic importance of the area. On his way back to Gangtok, he visited Dichu village, where he interacted with locals to understand their concerns. Residents shared their grievances and aspirations, and Mathur assured them of support from the Raj Bhavan to address their needs.

The visit underscores the state’s commitment to fostering a sense of community, strengthening ties between the armed forces and civilians, and promoting sustainable development in sensitive border regions.
