Assam Public Health Workers Intensify Protest Over Job Regularization and Benefits

Assam: The Assam Public Health Temporary Workers’ Council escalated its ongoing strike with a large-scale protest in front of the District Public Health Engineering Department’s office on January 6. The demonstration, marked by passionate chants and demands, highlighted the workers’ call for immediate job regularization and comprehensive benefits for temporary employees.

The protest follows a series of show-cause notices issued by departmental authorities to many striking workers, despite the strike entering its second month since December 3. Hundreds of men and women participated in the demonstration, showcasing solidarity and determination to achieve their demands.

Speaking at the protest, a participant shed light on the struggles faced by temporary workers, stating, “Recently, a ‘Jalamitra’ (water worker) lost his life while on duty in Golaghat district. Many such workers have also passed away post-retirement, yet their families have not received any government assistance.” This poignant account underscored the precarious conditions under which the workers operate, amplifying calls for immediate action.

The council warned that failure to address their grievances could lead to an intensification of the agitation. They cautioned that continued neglect might exacerbate the situation, further straining the department’s operations and affecting public services.

The protest highlights the growing unrest among temporary workers and their demand for recognition, stability, and fair treatment. As the strike continues, all eyes remain on the government and departmental authorities to address the workers’ concerns and find a resolution.
