Delhi High Court Denies Bail to Manipur Resident Accused of Ties with Myanmar-Based Rebel Groups

Imphal: The Delhi High Court has rejected a bail plea from Moirangthem Anand Singh, who is accused of having links with Myanmar-based rebel groups and conspiring to wage war against India.

The court’s decision was based on concerns that granting bail could pose a flight risk and potentially influence witnesses in the case.

A bench comprising Justices Prathiba M Singh and Amit Sharma stated that Singh’s release could exacerbate the already volatile situation in Manipur. The court noted that Singh’s previous release on bail had led to protests and law and order issues, demonstrating his significant influence in the region.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has established a prima facie case against Singh, with material evidence supporting his involvement in the alleged offences. However, Singh failed to meet the parameters for bail under Section 439 of the CrPC, which considers the seriousness of the offence, potential witness influence, and likelihood of fleeing from justice.

Singh was arrested in September 2023 from Manipur and brought to Delhi for questioning. The NIA claims that his arrest is part of a larger case involving a “transnational conspiracy” by Myanmar-based terror groups to wage war against the Indian government by exploiting ethnic unrest in Manipur.
