AAP Announces Lok Sabha Candidates for Delhi, Forms Seat-Sharing Pact with Congress
National Desk, 27th February: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has unveiled its candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Delhi, marking a significant development in the political landscape of the capital. Following a meeting of the AAP’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence, the candidates for four key constituencies were officially announced.
Somnath Bharti has been nominated for the New Delhi seat, while Mahabal Mishra will contest from West Delhi. Kuldeep Kumar and Sahiram have been named as candidates for the East Delhi and South Delhi constituencies, respectively. These nominations underscore AAP’s strategic move to bolster its presence in Delhi’s political arena, particularly in the backdrop of the BJP’s dominance in the previous Lok Sabha elections.
The decision on candidates for the Delhi seats holds paramount importance for AAP, given the BJP’s clean sweep of all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi in both the 2014 and 2019 general elections. In a bid to challenge BJP’s stronghold, AAP has formed a seat-sharing agreement with its ally, the Congress party. While AAP has named candidates for four seats, Congress will field candidates in the remaining three constituencies.
In addition to its electoral pursuits in Delhi, AAP has nominated Sushil Gupta to contest from Kurukshetra in Haryana, signaling its broader engagement in neighboring states. Furthermore, AAP and Congress have finalized seat-sharing arrangements in Haryana, Gujarat, Chandigarh, and Goa, emphasizing their collaborative approach to electoral politics.
However, in Punjab, where AAP initially aimed to contest all 13 Lok Sabha constituencies, the party is yet to finalize its candidate list. Gopal Rai of AAP assured that the names of AAP candidates for Punjab’s Lok Sabha seats would be announced soon, indicating ongoing deliberations within the party regarding its electoral strategy in the state.
