All India Mahila Congress Chief Alka Lamba Detained with Others in Women’s Reservation Law Campaign

National Desk, July 29, 2024 Several Mahila Congress leaders and party workers has been detained on Monday after they staged a nation-wide campaign demanding immediate implementation of the women reservation law in the Lok Sabha an State assemblies.

Notably, thousands of women members of the All-India Mahila Congress (AIMC) from various parts of the country gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi today.

Meanwhile, Alka Lamba, National President, All India Mahila Congress was allegedly manhandled by the police.

It needs to mention that the “historic women reservation legislation,” passed by both houses of Parliament last year, mandates one-third reservations for women in the Lok Sabha and State assemblies. Despite its passage, the law’s implementation has been delayed.

Alka Lamba spearheaded the campaign, stating, “This campaign, launched from Jantar Mantar, will spread to every state, district, city, and village until the demands of half of the country’s population are met, ensuring their rights and security.”

Lamba criticized the Modi government for postponing the law’s implementation until after the 2024 general elections. She emphasized the urgency of enacting the legislation to benefit women in states like Haryana, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and Maharashtra, where elections are slated for later this year.

“The ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ is a landmark legislation that will fortify women’s empowerment and their role in politics. It was passed with a significant majority, and now it must be enacted promptly,” Lamba asserted.

The Mahila Congress outlined three main demands: the immediate implementation of the 33% women’s reservation, economic justice to combat inflation and unemployment impacting women, and social justice to address rising crimes against women. Lamba highlighted that the promised Mahalakshmi Scheme would provide ₹1 lakh annual assistance to women in poor families.

Referencing recent data, Lamba pointed out that Rajasthan reported 20,000 cases of crimes against women in the past six months, indicating a lack of fear of the law among criminals. She also condemned the recent incident in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, where two women were buried alive.

Lamba assured that Congress leaders, including President Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and K.C. Venugopal, have committed to raising these issues in both Houses of Parliament to ensure urgent action.

The campaign’s momentum underscores the AIMC’s push for immediate legislative action and heightened protection for women across India.
