Arunachal: AMSU observes 12-hour bandh in Lekang over demand for PRC

Northeast, 8th November: The All Moran Students Union’s (AMSU) Arunachal Pradesh committee has declared a 12-hour bandh in Lekang, Namsai district, Arunachal Pradesh, commencing from 5 AM on November 8. This protest action aims to draw attention to the issues faced by the indigenous Moran Tribe in Lekang, particularly the failure to issue Permanent Residence Certificates (PRC) and other rights by the government of Arunachal Pradesh.

In their press release, the AMSU stated their appeal for cooperation and urged people to observe the bandh call as a form of protest. The 12-hour bandh will be in effect from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM on the specified date.

The bandh exempts certain categories, including school vehicles carrying students, individuals traveling for exams or interviews, pharmacies, ambulances for medical emergencies, arms and paramilitary movements, fire brigades, and milk vans.

This protest follows earlier criticism by the AMSU toward the Government of Arunachal Pradesh for its perceived lackadaisical approach to granting PRCs to the Moran community living in border areas between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The AMSU has threatened to escalate their agitation if both the Arunachal Pradesh and Assam governments continue to neglect the concerns of the Moran people in the region. To press their demands for PRC in Arunachal Pradesh, the Moran Community previously organized a mass gathering and rally in Namsai district.
