Arunachal: APUWJ Condemns Killing of Journalist Mukesh Chandrakar, Demands Justice
Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) has strongly condemned the brutal murder of independent journalist Mukesh Chandrakar, whose body was discovered in a septic tank after he exposed corruption in a road construction project in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district.
In a statement, the APUWJ described the murder as “a despicable act that underscores the growing threats faced by journalists in their pursuit of truth.” The union expressed outrage, calling the killing a chilling reminder of the risks journalists face while working to uphold democracy and transparency.
Chandrakar, a contributor to a national media outlet, went missing shortly after publishing an investigative report exposing irregularities in a local contractor-led road construction project. His exposé had sparked public outrage over corruption in infrastructure development. Days later, his body was found on the contractor’s property, officials confirmed.
APUWJ President Amar Sangno underscored the severity of the attack on press freedom. “Press freedom is the cornerstone of any democracy, and its defenders should not have to fear for their lives,” he stated, adding that such incidents erode public trust in institutions meant to safeguard transparency and accountability.
The APUWJ has urged both state and central governments to conduct a transparent investigation into Chandrakar’s murder and to implement robust measures to protect journalists, particularly those covering corruption and crime.
The union also highlighted a disturbing pattern of violence against journalists across the country, noting that such attacks undermine the democratic process. “This heinous act serves as a grim reminder of the critical need for safety and security for those who dedicate their lives to uncovering the truth,” the APUWJ said.
Chandrakar’s death has sent shockwaves through the journalistic community, amplifying calls for urgent reforms to protect press freedom and ensure that journalists can carry out their work without fear of reprisal.
