Arunachal CM Inaugurates 11th Greater Kameng Badminton Championship, Emphasizes Unity through Sports
Northeast Desk, 2nd December: Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated the 11th edition of the Greater Kameng Badminton Championship in Seijosa, Arunachal Pradesh. The championship, featuring participation from nine clubs spanning the erstwhile Kameng district, aims not only to promote badminton but also to foster unity and brotherhood among the citizens.
Addressing the gathering, CM Khandu highlighted the event’s significance beyond sports, emphasizing its role in building camaraderie and unity. He commended the rotational location across the four districts, symbolizing shared heritage and regional unity.
Arunachal Pradesh has witnessed notable success in sports, with athletes securing 912 medals in national and international events over the past six years. Khandu attributed this success to supportive sports policies from both the central and state governments.
Minister of Sports Mama Natung praised the championship for sustaining unity amidst regional changes. He expressed confidence in the enduring unity of the Greater Kameng region despite administrative divisions.
CM Khandu announced plans for a state-of-the-art badminton academy with eight international standard courts near the Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy in Itanagar. This academy aims to nurture badminton talent and promote the sport at national and international levels.
Khandu affirmed the government’s continued backing for the Greater Kameng Badminton Championship, with an increased grant of Rs 30 lakh. Anticipating the next Olympics, substantial cash rewards were allocated for medal winners – Rs 5 crore for Gold, Rs 3 crore for Silver, and Rs 2 crore for Bronze.
In attendance, BJP President and MLA Seijosa, Biyuram Wahge, praised the Greater Kameng Badminton Association for fostering sportsmanship and unity. He emphasized the positive impact of such initiatives on youth, steering them toward a constructive future and countering negative influences.
