Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society Congratulates BJP, Urges Focus on Women’s and Children’s Welfare
Northeast Desk, 3rd June: In the wake of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) recent electoral victory in Arunachal Pradesh, the Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) has written a congratulatory letter to the State President of the BJP in Itanagar. The society emphasized the trust and confidence the people have placed in the party’s leadership and urged the new government to prioritize the welfare and empowerment of women and children.
The APWWS highlighted several key issues in their letter, particularly the need for legislation to ban polygamy. They cited the negative social, psychological, and economic impacts of polygamy on women and children and called for a legal framework to prohibit this practice as a step towards ensuring gender equality and protecting women’s rights in the state.
Furthermore, the society requested that no polygamous MLA be allocated to the Department of Women and Child Development. They argued that effective advocacy for women’s rights would be challenging if the department were overseen by someone practicing polygamy. The APWWS emphasized the importance of having leaders who uphold monogamy and gender equality values to foster an environment where issues affecting women and children can be addressed openly and effectively.
The letter also expressed confidence in the new government’s ability to promote the welfare of women and children, contributing to the state’s overall progress.
Key Issues Raised by APWWS:
- Legislation to Ban Polygamy: The society urged the government to introduce legislation banning polygamy in Arunachal Pradesh, highlighting the practice’s adverse effects on women and children and advocating for gender equality and the protection of women’s rights.
- Allocation of Portfolios: The APWWS requested that no polygamous MLA be allocated to the Department of Women and Child Development, stressing the need for leadership that upholds monogamy and gender equality to effectively address and advocate for women’s issues.
The APWWS’s letter reflects a significant push towards gender equality and the protection of women and children’s rights in Arunachal Pradesh, urging the new government to take decisive action in these areas.
