ASF: 11000 Pigs die in Mizoram
Guwahati: While COVID-19 cases in Mizoram are continuously on the rise, it has now reported an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) with over 11000 pigs being reported dead.
Since the month of March, the infectious ASF has been continuously affecting 11 districts in the state and till Monday, more than 11000 pigs have been killed in this outbreak. This has resulted in a financial loss of around Rs 120 crore for the state.
It may be mentioned that the ASF virus is a large, double-stranded DNA virus in the Asfarviridae family. ASF causes hemorrhagic fever with high mortality rates in domestic pigs. Some isolates can cause the death of animals as quickly as a week after infection.
