Northeast Desk, 4th August: The African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in Mizoram has reached alarming levels, with the death toll among pigs climbing to 8,718 as of Sunday. In a single day, 34 additional swine deaths were reported, and authorities culled 59 more pigs in response to the worsening situation.

Since the beginning of 2024, the state has taken drastic measures by culling a total of 16,158 pigs to curb the spread of the virus. Recent reports highlight the severity of the outbreak, with Lunglei district experiencing 24 new pig deaths and the culling of 15 pigs. Meanwhile, Hnahthial district has recorded seven deaths and culled 29 pigs, and Aizawl district has reported three new deaths with nine pigs culled.

The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department confirmed that the ASF has impacted 200 villages throughout Mizoram. The outbreak, which has persisted since 2021, is exacerbated by the region’s warm monsoon conditions. Historical data reveals the severity of the crisis: 33,417 pigs succumbed to ASF in 2021, followed by 12,795 in 2022, and 1,039 in 2023.
