Assam: 104 Sacks Of Burmese Supari Seized In Halakandi

Guwahati: As many as 104 sacks of Burmese Supari have been seized in Bilaipur village of Hailkandi district in Assam.

This was informed by a police official.

The police seized the sacks containing Burmese supari in a search from the warehouse of one Nizam Uddin Laskar of Lalpani in Bilaipur.

According to the police source, Uddin had a long history of smuggling Burmese supari out of his Godown and into various areas of the Hailakandi district.

However, the Uddin has been on the run since the police officials took the sacks of Burma supari from his godown.

Speaking at the occasion, Hailakandi Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bidyut Das informed the media that the seized supari had a market worth of almost Rs 20 lakh.

”Acting on specific information the Officer-in-charge of Bilaipur police station conducted a raid and seized 104 sacks of Burmese supari from the warehouse of one Nizam Uddin. After investigation, it came to the fore that those sacks don’t belong to him and were stored there by someone else. In this regard, we have filed a case and we have seized the Burmese supari. However, no one has been arrested in this case and we continuously looking for the person who kept the Burmese supari at Nizam Uddin’s warehouse,” the police officer added. 

The Assam Jatiyabadi Yuva Parishad’s central secretary, Kabir Uddin, has claimed that the police are conducting daily raids in different parts of the district and confiscating Burmese supari along with their carriers, such as lorries or tempos.

Kabir urged the police to launch a thorough inquiry into the syndicate’s leader and take decisive action against anyone who are connected to it.
