Guwahati, 12th September: Shankar Jyoti Baruah, the General Secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), announced his resignation on September 12, amid allegations of emotional and physical abuse by a student. Baruah claimed he made the decision voluntarily, without external pressure, and will soon submit his resignation letter to the central committee.
In a social media statement, Baruah expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure and assured that the truth behind the allegations would be revealed in court. The controversy began when a student accused Baruah of abuse, false promises of marriage, and threats. AASU had decided to address the issue, allowing Baruah to take voluntary action. Baruah admitted to a past relationship with the student, claiming it ended six months ago.
