During his address, Syngkon reiterated his call for the inclusion of Khasi in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, reflecting on his maiden speech in Parliament on this very subject. He urged writers to uphold the linguistic purity of Khasi by avoiding the use of foreign terms in their literary works.
As part of the celebration, eleven students were awarded for their outstanding achievements in Khasi language studies across various academic levels. Additionally, three significant publications were released: Ka Antigone by Hamles Mylliem Umlong, Ka Kheiñkur Kheiñkha Khasi by Raphael Warjri, and The Megalithic Culture of Khasi Jaintia Hills by Dr. Marco Babit Mitri.
A seminar titled “Shillong – Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow” brought together scholars to discuss the historical evolution of the city, its current state, and its future prospects. The seminar coincided with Shillong’s 150th anniversary, offering an opportunity for reflection on the city’s development since the British colonial era.
The event underscored the Khasi Authors Society’s ongoing dedication to safeguarding the Khasi language and cultural heritage, while also reflecting on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Shillong.
