Assam-Arunachal Sign ‘Namsai Declaration’ to resolve Border Conflict

Guwahati: The governments of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh has signed the historic “Namsai Declaration” in an effort to resolve the border dispute at the chief minister-level conference conducted in Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday.

The number of contested settlements has been reduced by both states under the declaration.

Speaking about the protracted border conflict between the two states, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that only 86 villages are currently under dispute as opposed to 123 previously.

“The boundary conflict between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh has been resolved or at least curtailed. Not all 123 villages are involved; currently, just 86 villages are. It’s historic,” Sarma said.

“We’ll attempt to settle the remaining issues by September 15 of this year, based on our current boundary. This marks an important turning point in the development of our friendship and fraternity,” he further added.

Sarma further assured that the resolution of the conflict between the two nations would not obstruct local development efforts.

Meanwhile, Arunachal chief minister Pema Khandu stated that July 15, 2022, is a historic day and a significant milestone. He also said that no previous governments had been able to fix the seven-decade-old problem.
