Assam: ATM Fraudster Strikes in Sribhumi; Woman Loses Rs 1.4 Lakh

Assam: A distressing incident of ATM fraud has unfolded in Sribhumi, Assam, leaving a woman, Jhurna Rani Roy, financially devastated.

The victim, a resident of Sribhumi, had visited an SBI ATM branch to update her passbook. While struggling to operate the machine, a seemingly helpful young man intervened, offering assistance. Unbeknownst to her, this act of kindness was a carefully orchestrated ploy to defraud her.

Under the guise of aiding her, the fraudster swiftly switched Jhurna Rani’s ATM card with a counterfeit one. The unsuspecting victim, unaware of the deception, continued with her transaction. The next day, she was shocked to discover that her bank account had been drained, leaving a mere Rs 200 balance.

Investigations revealed that the fraudster had meticulously planned the heist, withdrawing substantial sums from various locations, including Sribhumi district, Barak Valley, and even Nagaland. The victim, distraught and unable to find resolution through the bank, approached the local police station to file a formal complaint.

Authorities have initiated a thorough investigation into the matter, examining CCTV footage from the ATM and nearby establishments. The police are confident in their ability to track down the culprit and bring them to justice. This incident serves as a stark reminder for the public to exercise extreme caution while conducting financial transactions at ATMs and to be wary of unsolicited assistance.
