Assam Cabinet expansion: Jayanta Malla Baruah & Nandita to be sworn as ministers tomorrow

Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced that two new ministers will be inducted into the cabinet tomorrow.

According to an official press release, the two new inductees are Nalbari MLA Jayanta Mallah Baruah and Haflong MLA Nandita Garlosa.

Both inductees ran on a BJP ticket in the 2021 state assembly elections and won their respective constituencies.

Baruah also serves as the political secretary to the BJP Legislative Party’s leader (Chief Minister of Assam).

The swearing-in event will take place at Kalakshetra in Guwahati tomorrow at 3 pm, the press release further stated.

This is the first cabinet expansion since the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led cabinet was formed on May 10.

The BJP has 11 members in the 14-member ministry, two from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and one from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).

According to Article 164(1A), the total number of ministers in a state cannot exceed 15% of the total number of members of its legislative assembly. Assam’s 126-member assembly can have a maximum of 18 ministers, including the chief minister, as per the law.
