Assam CM: Crime Against Women Down by 41 Percent in Assam

Guwahati, 16 May: Assam Government has managed to make the last two years a safer environment for women inspite of isolated incidents of violence. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that there has been an unparalleled crackdown on underage weddings and a 41% decrease in crime against women.

It should be noted that the Assam government’s campaign against underage marriage which gained global headlines resulted in an extraordinary crackdown that put up to 3,200 individuals in jail.

Additionally, the state saw a decline in child abuse cases which stood at 18% during the previous two years.

Assam registered the greatest number of cases of crime against women for the fifth consecutive year earlier in 2022, according to the 69th edition of the National Crime Records Bureau report for the year 2021.

According to data provided under the heading “Crime in India 2021 report,” Assam had a rate of 168.3 crimes against women which was significantly higher than the national average of 64.5. Odisha came in third with 137.8 followed by Delhi in second with 147.6.

Assam has a 143.3 percent crime rate against women in 2017, 166 percent in 2018, 177 percent in 2019 and 154.3 percent the following year.

In 2020, Assam recorded 26 instances of rape-cum-murder/gang rape – the third highest figure in the country after Uttar Pradesh (31) and Madhya Pradesh (27). Last year, 1,658 instances of rape were reported. 4,642 assaults with the purpose to offend modesty were also reported.

In 2021, Assam saw an increase in cases of crimes against women recording 29,046 incidents with a 52.9% chargesheeting rate.
